MySpace, the most popular online social network, announced they have begun a political section as a precursor to the upcoming elections.
This Myspace creation will be called the Impact Channel. The NewsCorp owned sitewill feature pages for 10 presidential candidates ; 5 Republicans and 5 Democrats.
Comscore Media Metrix claims,MySpace landed about 60 million United States visitors in the month of December and about 90 million visitors from around the world.
As the election nears, candidates have gone online to use the viral nature of the internet to communicate directly with voters. Some young voters meshed in their own online culture, as found amongst the young adults and teens of Myspace, have been notoriously hard to influence through the normal means of mainstream communication.
Myspace visitors are provided easy ways to copy and paste candidates' flashy campaign graphics to personal MySpace pages and to bolster the online finance and outreach for the various campaigns.
Albeit Myspace's Impact Channel is first inspired by the presidential election, it has room to grow as a conduit for world political thought for political contests of all typesas well as charitable efforts.
The new political channel creates a sophisticated communication platform to bring political candidates and civic organizations to the site's dynamic young users. Modeled after other Myspace channels such as MySpace Music and a Myspace video channel, the new channel will enable the community to learn regarding the politicians, bring a new level of involvement of politics to the internets daily life, and make available facets of citizenship relevant to their lives.
It is already clear that the impact channel will play an important role in the 2008 Presidential campaign.
