“ My weight has gone up and down for years.”
“I feel like a failure! I just can’t seem to lose weight like I used too.”
“ I try diet after diet and nothing seems to work!”
Sound familiar? Well this was me 120 lbs ago. The good news is there is a cure to the damage that “yo-yo” dieting has down to your metabolic rate over the years.
What is your metabolic rate? Your Metabolic rate is the amount of energy expended while at rest in a neutrally temperate environment, in the post-absorptive state. Simply put, the higher your metabolic rate or metabolism, the faster your body will naturally burn calories.
Your metabolism decreases with age and with the loss of lean body mass. Illness, unhealthy eating habits, stress levels, and the amount of energy you expend per day all affect your metabolic rate.
Don’t get discouraged though. Remember, I did say that there was a cure. I also said that I lost 120 lbs.
Now, I am sure many of you have tried low fat diets; however, did you know that most low fat foods replace sugar for fat so that the food still tastes edible. Okay, so you have less fat for more sugar. What happens to unused sugar in the body? It turns to FAT! The only way to burn sugar is expend energy. How do you expend energy? That’s right exercise!
So, maybe you are now trying a low-carb diet, one of those reduce sugar diets that are so popular right now. In order to make low-carb food tasty manufactures add what? Yes, FAT! How do you get read of FAT? You get rid of fat by expending energy. How do you expend energy? That’s right exercise! Noticing a pattern?
Ok. So your thinking no low-carb diets, no low-fat diets, how about high protein diets? Diets high in protein do help with your metabolic rate; however without enough carbs you will have little or no energy. How do you lose weight if you are tired all of the time?.
Exactly! You don’t.
Your body needs a certain amount of each, fat, protein, and carbohydrates to run efficiently. A diet that includes 40% protein, 40% carbs, and 20% fat will leave you feeling full, satisfied, and help your body regain it’s efficiency.
Now, that you have the basics of eating right. The next step, is to cure the damage that the years of dieting has caused. Every time you gain and lose weight through one these unhealthy diets your body goes into what is known as “starvation mode”. Your body says to your metabolism, “ Hey, slow down. You are burning calories to fast! I am starving.” Your metabolism listens and slows down to compensate for the new “fad” you have decided to make your body endure.
Did you notice anything similar with each diet fad that we discussed? The best way to lose weight is to eat a proper ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fat along with EXERCISE!!!! Exercise is the key! It only takes 20-30minutes a day, 5 days a week! Walk, bike, run, swim, do aerobic, it’s your choice, but the only way to get it off and keep it off is by moving. Once you start moving it will get easier and easier. You will have more energy, due to a higher metabolism, you will be able to EAT! and your body won’t pack on the pounds.
